Google brings vibe coding to production apps with new AI Studio upgrade

-

Google has introduced a major upgrade to its AI Studio platform, rolling out a new coding experience powered by its Antigravity agent aimed at turning simple prompts into fully functional, production-ready applications.

The update expands AI Studio from a prototyping environment into a more complete development stack. Developers can now build applications with backend infrastructure, user authentication, and persistent storage directly inside the platform, removing the need to rely on external tools.

A key component of the upgrade is the Antigravity coding agent, which is designed to understand entire project structures and execute multi-step code changes with minimal input. The agent can automatically detect when an application requires a database or login system and provision services through built-in Firebase integration, including Cloud Firestore and Firebase Authentication.

The new experience also supports modern web development frameworks such as Next.js alongside React and Angular. The agent can install external libraries and tools automatically, enabling features like animations, UI components, and real-time functionality without manual setup.

Google has also introduced support for secure API integrations through a built-in secrets manager, allowing developers to connect applications to third-party services such as payment processors, maps, or databases. This marks a shift toward enabling production-level applications rather than simple demos.

The platform now includes persistent sessions, allowing users to resume projects across devices without losing progress. Developers can also build real-time multiplayer applications and collaborative tools, signaling a move into more complex use cases beyond static apps.

AI Studio was originally introduced as a developer interface for experimenting with Google’s Gemini models and building AI-powered prototypes. The latest update reflects a broader evolution toward agent-driven software development, where AI systems handle much of the coding, infrastructure setup, and iteration process.

The upgrade comes as competition intensifies across AI coding platforms. Tools from companies such as GitHub, Replit, and OpenAI are increasingly focused on enabling autonomous or semi-autonomous software creation, often referred to as agentic development or vibe coding.

Google said the updated AI Studio experience has already been used internally to build hundreds of thousands of applications in recent months. Future updates are expected to include deeper integration with Google Workspace tools such as Drive and Sheets, as well as tighter connections to its broader cloud infrastructure.
