Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday disclosed discussions with the US on potential joint management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, without Ukraine’s participation, according to Kommersant.

Putin said Washington had expressed interest in establishing crypto mining operations at Europe’s largest nuclear power site. Another idea also under discussion was to supply electricity from the plant to Ukraine, he noted.

Putin stated that while Ukrainians still run the facility, they have now taken Russian citizenship.

The plant had supplied more than 20% of Ukraine’s electricity output until the full-scale Russian invasion disrupted operations, leading to the plant’s occupation and shutdown of power generation for Ukraine’s grid.

Russia has occupied the site since March 2022, operating it through Rosatom despite ongoing conflict-related risks.
