Binance Co-Founder and Binance Charity to Jointly Deploy Over $1.5 Million in Aid to Myanmar and Thailand in the Aftermath of the Earthquake

-

Binance Co-Founder Changpeng Zhao and Binance Charity, following the 7.7 magnitude earthquake, have leveraged cryptocurrency to facilitate rapid relief deployment in Myanmar and Thailand.

The earthquake originated in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city, and has caused widespread destruction and infrastructure damage. The same was the case in Thailand, as people felt the tremors in Bangkok, leading to significant casualty numbers. Authorities have made appeals for international assistance as thousands have sustained injuries, with 1700 fatalities reported so far.

On 28 March 2025, Zhao announced a personal donation of 1000

, valued at $630,000, to help support relief activities in both of the affected countries.

The donation is evenly distributed, allocating 500 BNB to Myanmar and another 500 BNB to Thailand. Zhao intends to use the donated funds to aid in infrastructure redevelopment, medical assistance, and emergency services. He has entrusted Binance and Binance Thailand to oversee the distribution of the funds.

Zhao’s actions have encouraged others in the crypto community to contribute towards the ongoing relief efforts. For instance, Anndy Lian, an intergovernmental blockchain advisor, has donated 44 BNB to organizations assisting Myanmar’s relief operations.

Binance Charity Launches Airdrop Initiative

Complimenting the personal donation made by Zhao, Binance Charity has started an airdrop initiative to donate up to $1.5 million in BNB to those affected in Myanmar and Thailand. Through this initiative, Binance Charity hopes to provide financial assistance to those impacted through the Know Your Consumer (KYC) and Proof of Address (POA) protocols.

Eligible users can expect to see BNB tokens show up on their Rewards Hub by 14 April 2025. The amount that each individual receives will be based on their verification status and location.

As per the distribution breakdown provided by Binance, all KYC-verified, non-dormant Binance users in Myanmar will receive $5 in BNB, while users with both KYC and POA verifications in impacted areas will receive $50 in BNB.

As for Thailand, users who are KYC verified with a registered living address will be receiving $5 in BNB, while users verified with an address in hard-hit zones will be receiving $10 in BNB. By leveraging blockchain technology, this structured approach to distributing aid ensures that those most in need are relieved in a timely and secure manner.

The Role of Cryptocurrency in Relief Aid

Cryptocurrencies are increasingly emerging as an indispensable tool for humanitarian aid. While banking restrictions might delay traditional aid, crypto donations are quick, transparent, and boundary-free. This efficiency is essential during disaster scenarios, where quick and efficient aid deployment can significantly impact recovery efforts.

Crypto has already showcased its potential during the Turkey- Syria earthquake (2023) and the Maui wildfires (2023), where it played an important role in increasing funds quickly, solidifying its position as a feasible solution in emergencies.

Save the Children and The Giving Block are some notable organizations that have advocated for blockchain donations to quickly and efficiently distribute financial assistance in disaster zones.
