Illuvium Restructures as Overworld Adopts MMO Lite Model

-

Illuvium has announced a significant restructuring effort, aiming to cut costs and adjust its development focus to an MMO lite model.

The company is reducing its monthly spending to $500,000 by March, with cost-cutting measures that include salary reductions, operational adjustments, and team layoffs. Some employees have been given the option to receive payments in Illuvium’s native $ILV token instead of $USDC.

These changes come as the studio prepares for a shift in its flagship title, Overworld, which will transition to an “MMO Lite” model rather than a traditional open-world experience. This move follows previous cost-cutting efforts in 2024, when Illuvium reduced its monthly expenses from nearly $1 million.

What changes can we expect from Overworld?

Overworld, initially designed as an open-world creature-collection game, will now adopt an “MMO Lite” structure as announced in December last year.

This means the game will incorporate multiplayer elements whilst maintaining a streamlined design without the complexity of a full-scale MMORPG. Players will still be able to explore, capture creatures, and engage in battles, but the focus will shift toward a more interactive and multiplayer-driven experience.

Illuvium has clarified that they are not building this from scratch but an effort to integrate MMO-style features in a way that keeps the game accessible. The studio has stated that development on Overworld’s new structure will become the primary focus by mid-2025, following the completion of major updates to Illuvium Arena’s PvP mode in the second quarter.

What’s next for Overworld?

Alongside the restructuring and game design changes, Illuvium has previously announced plans to introduce AI-driven NPCs to Overworld.

Through a partnership with Virtuals Protocol, these NPCs will provide interactive elements such as dynamic dialogue and personalised questlines. The goal is to create a more immersive environment without the need for large-scale manual content creation.

Whilst the restructuring extends Illuvium’s financial runway, the company has acknowledged that further funding will be necessary to complete Overworld’s transition. The success of these changes will depend on how effectively the team can implement the revised game structure whilst maintaining community engagement.
