UFC Freedom 250 White House Event

This week, Crypto.com disclosed it will fund a $1 million bonus pool for selected fighters on the card, paid out in CRO, the native token of the Cronos blockchain ecosystem. At current exchange rates recorded on April 11, one million U.S. dollars equaled approximately 14.6 million CRO.

The bonus pool is separate from UFC’s standard Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night awards, which UFC President and CEO Dana White distributes after each event. UFC has not yet released the criteria fighters must meet to qualify for the CRO payout.

White called it the largest bonus in UFC history. “The world will be watching on June 14,” he said in a statement released with the announcement.

Crypto.com Co-Founder and CEO Kris Marszalek tied the promotion directly to the company’s milestone. “I can think of no better way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Crypto.com than by making history at the White House,” Marszalek said.

The partnership between UFC and Crypto.com dates to 2021, when the platform became the organization’s first-ever Official Fight Kit Partner. The release noted that the Freedom 250 bonus pool represents a new layer on that five-year relationship.

CRO functions as the utility token inside the Cronos ecosystem, a decentralized, open-source blockchain protocol. Crypto.com has used CRO as part of its rewards and incentive programs for its user base since the token’s introduction.

The main event at UFC Freedom 250 will pit UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria against interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje. Topuria holds the No. 2 pound-for-pound ranking in the organization.

The co-main event features former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira challenging Ciryl Gane, a former interim heavyweight champion, for the UFC heavyweight title. A Pereira win would give him championships in three separate weight classes, a feat no UFC fighter has accomplished.

The release shared with Bitcoin.com News notes that the UFC Freedom 250 event will be distributed exclusively by Paramount+ in the United States.

UFC, part of TKO Group Holdings (NYSE: TKO), stages more than 40 live events per year and distributes programming to more than 950 million households across 210 countries and territories.

The digital asset exchange believes the $1 million CRO pool adds a financial dimension to what UFC is billing as its most high-profile event, with fighter payouts dependent on performance inside the cage rather than simply appearing on the card.
